This article is about 23rd century Bellerophon class. You may be looking for 25th century Bellerophon-class.
For other uses, see Farragut.

The Bellerophon class was a 23rd century Federation starship class in service by the 2240s decade. (SNW episode: "A Quality of Mercy")

In the 25th century, this spacecraft type was identified as the Farragut class, a tier 6-rated temporal cruiser in Starfleet and Khitomer Alliance service in the 2410s. The class was represented by the USS Farragut (NCC-1647). (STO website: Ascension: Command the Farragut!)

History and specifics[]

23rd century[]

The Farragut at Earth in 2411.

The USS Farragut was built at the San Francisco Fleet Yards over California, Earth and launched on 2 October 2243. Its pair of dedication plaques, mounted on the back wall of the bridge, identified as a Bellerophon-class starship. According to one of the plaques, this starship was 316 meters long, 201 meters wide and 69 meters tall. It weighed 150,000 tonnes. Propulsion systems consisted of the warp drive and impulse engine. The tractor beam was categorized as a tool for "rescue". Tactical weaponry included phaser arrays, fore and aft photon torpedo launchers. (SNW episode: "A Quality of Mercy")

This class was related to the Miranda-class. The hull consisted of a round saucer section, with a centrally located dorsal bridge dome, and a pair of underslung warp nacelles supported by inward-curving nacelle pylons. A pair of red-glowing impulse engines flanked the rearmost point of the saucer. A vestigial secondary hull was embedded in the underside of the saucer, running aft from the ventral midpoint. The deflector dish was suspended from a short arm extending forward from the ventral hull extension. (SDCC Issue 003: "USS Farragut NCC-1647")

In 2259, a Bellerophon-class vessel was docked inside a Federation shipyard alongside the Constitution-class USS Enterprise. (SNW episode: "Strange New Worlds")

Farragut Beta configuration.

In 2411, Starfleet commissioned or recommissioned a Farragut-class USS Farragut as a tier-6 temporal cruiser. The vessel, at one point, entered Earth's orbit. (STO website: Ascension: Command the Farragut!)

At the time, Starfleet already operated a Bellerophon-class science vessel derived from the 24th century Intrepid-class long range science vessel unrelated to the 23rd century design. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Bridge officer stations beyond the commanding officer included stations for a commander doubling as engineer and temporal operative, a science officer holding the rank of lieutenant commander, a lieutenant commander pulling double duty as pilot and officer of any other department, a tactical lieutenant and an engineering ensign. As an Alliance timeship, the Farragut class was equipped with the molecular reconstruction mechanic. Additionally, the cruiser communications array was standard to Alliance cruisers. A ship of this class gained beneficial "traits" over its time in service, which included absorptive plating, rapid repairs, enhanced plating, armored hull and damn the torpedoes, which improved the vessel's damage resistance against projectile weapons like mines and targetable torpedoes. In the 2410s, the Farragut class contained four fore and aft weapon emplacements each. (STO website: Ascension: Command the Farragut!)

The default equipment consisted of a shield array, deflector array, impulse engine and matter anti-matter warp core. Fore weapons consisted of a phaser dual beam bank, a pair of phaser beam arrays and a photon torpedo launcher. Aft weapons included a photon torpedo launcher, a pair of phaser beam arrays and a phaser turret. At Alliance shipyards, this vessel's hull material could modified. The nacelle pylons allowed two configurations, the original 2250s-era inward curved pylons and the 2410s-era straightened, outward-pointing pylons Farragut Beta configuration. (STO - Ascension mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

In 2411, the USS Farragut was the first Alliance starship equipped with the antimatter bomb deployment console. This special weapon was based on a similar device used by James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) and depended on the volatile properties of antimatter to create an explosion. (STO website: Ascension: Command the Farragut!)

Alternate timelines[]

In an alternate timeline where Christopher Pike remained captain of the USS Enterprise, James T. Kirk had attained command of the USS Farragut by 2266. In this timeline, the Farragut appeared in a Bellerophon-class configuration and was destroyed in the opening battle of the Second Romulan War. (SNW episode: "A Quality of Mercy")
