The Berena-class was a Federation class II cargo ship design in use by Federation merchants in the late 23rd century.
Specifications[]
This merchant starship class was designed to maximize its fully loaded warp speed while using power efficiently, providing pleasant accommodations for the crew, and optimizing atmospheric flight. It was built with type FWI-1 warp engines, type FIA-2 impulse engines and type FSB deflector shields. It could carry a crew of 8 with up to 6,250 metric tons of cargo at a cruising speed of warp six.
Deck 1 contained the computer core, bridge, briefing room, library, plus the CO's ready room and quarters. Deck 2 featured engineering, sickbay, a ready room for the first officer, crew staterooms, a common area, one 4-person transporter, two cargo holds, and water storage. Deck 3 contained life support, a cargo transporter, food processor equipment, deflector machinery, emergency batteries, and engineering compartments. It was capable of landing.
Legally the class could not be built with ship-mounted phasers or photon torpedoes, but hidden lockers were installed in engineering and on the bridge for hand-held weapons in case the vessel was boarded.
Service history and disposition[]
Specifications for the class were conceived by Captain Beowulf Leahy and developed by engineer Alyssa Berena when their small transport SS Wells Fargo was retired from service. Their fellow crewmen took out loans to fund the construction of a prototype, the SS Farstar, which launched in the mid-2270s decade, on reference stardate 2/1912.24. They licensed the design to SynchWarp Enterprises, which exclusively manufactured the ship class.
As of the late 2280s, 41 Berena-class vessels had been built. Each was sold for 16.583 million credits. (Stardate Magazine vol. 3, Issue 6: "Federation Berena Class Free Trader")
