Beta Origii was a former star or system, now a radioactive nebula, located within "the Triangle", a region of the Federation-Klingon Neutral Zone in the galaxy's Alpha or Beta Quadrants.

History and specifics[]

In the 17th century, an F type yellow giant star went supernova. The blast destroyed every neighboring system within several light years, and the Beta Origi nebula formed in its wake.

The nearby Essaian system survived the blast, as its inhabitants built a rudimentary Dyson sphere around their star and homeworld.

Even in the 23rd century, nebular radiation made navigation hazardous. The outermost tendrils of the nebula were about 37 light years away from the Klingon Empire's border.

In the late 23rd century, a battle occurred on the outskirts of the nebula. Three Vas Hatham-class Romulan bird-of-prey cruisers ambushed the IKS K'vinta, killing 323 of its crew and destroying its engineering hull. (FASA RPG module: The Barrier of Essai)

Beta Origii's orbit was the final resting place of the criminal Zagtun Bonecrusher, who was said to be floating in pieces after his death in the 2280s decade. (TOS comic: "Not... Sweeney!")

It was not referenced in either source whether Beta Origii had been a singular star without notable orbiting bodies or a star system, which could potentially contain more than one star. The stellar notation using the Greek language letter "beta" indicates that there might be a star group or constellation of some sort named "Origii", of which Beta Origii would logically be indicated to be the second most prominent star or system.
