Beta Portolan was a star system, located in or near the 23rd century boundaries of Federation space in the galaxy's Alpha or Beta Quadrants.

History and specifics[edit | edit source]

The Beta Portolan system's orbit was the location of a number of worlds, including two worlds that were formerly inhabited by intelligent lifeforms. (TOS - Crucible novel: Provenance of Shadows)

Beta Portolan was attacked by blastoneuron neural parasites. (TOS episode: "Operation -- Annihilate!")

The Beta Portolan civilizations were annihilated in the 19th century. (Decipher RPG module: Worlds)

A straight line between Beta Portolan and Deneva would pass through Levinius, Theta Cygni, and Ingraham B. (TOS episode: "Operation -- Annihilate!")

In the 2260s decade, archeologists excavated ancient ruins from both cultures, though they did not uncover the cause of their extinctions. In the year 2267, Spock deduced from additional evidence that the system's civilizations had been wiped out by the parasites. (TOS - Crucible novel: Provenance of Shadows, TOS episode: "Operation -- Annihilate!")

Beta Portolan was plotted in an explored galaxy star chart visible in 2293 inside Captain James T. Kirk's quarters aboard the USS Enterprise-A. (TOS movie: The Undiscovered Country)

In 2364, this explored galaxy star chart was also visible at Starfleet Headquarters. (TNG episode: "Conspiracy")

The stellar notation using the Greek language letter "beta" indicates that there might be a star group or constellation of some sort named "Portolan", of which Beta Portolan would logically be indicated to be the second most prominent star or system.
