Lieutenant William "Bill" Hadley was a 23rd century Human man, a Starfleet officer who served aboard the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in the 2260s decade.

Biography[]

Like many officers attached to the Enterprise, Hadley had rotating assignments aboard the ship, ranging from helm and navigation duties, to security.

Hadley was of Scottish heritage, preferring cranachan to peach cobbler. He played backgammon, bowling and ping pong. He was friends with Ignacio Sanchez and Leonard McCoy. (TOS - Crucible novel: Provenance of Shadows)

Hadley earned an A5 journeyman's computer classification, among the highest aboard the ship. (TOS novel: Allegiance in Exile)

Prior to joining the Enterprise, Hadley served aboard the Archernar IV contact station. (TOS comic: "Mission's End, Issue 2")

In 2266, Hadley manned the communications station on the bridge during a confrontation with a Shechenag ship near Tlaoli IV while Nyota Uhura was in command. (TOS - The Janus Gate novel: Past Prologue)

In early 2267, Hadley was serving on the bridge when Khan Noonien Singh took control of the ship, and passed out along with the rest of the bridge crew when Khan cut life-support to the bridge. He was later restored to full health and was present at Khan's hearing. (TOS episode: "Space Seed")

A few weeks later, Hadley was transferred to the security division and served under Lt. Commander Barry Giotto. He formed part of the search detail that was charged with tracking down Lazarus, and several weeks later, accompanied a large detachment to Janus VI to track down the mysterious Horta. (TOS episodes: "The Alternative Factor", "The Devil in the Dark")

Shortly after, Hadley was occupying the navigator's position during the Enterprise's discovery of the planet Gateway. (TOS episode: "The City on the Edge of Forever" & TOS - Crucible novel: The Fire and the Rose)

Montgomery Scott asked Hadley to take the secondary hull to security alert status two following a murder, clearing decks of nonessential crewmen, arming ship's personnel, and doubling guards at all entrances. Hadley took Ross Johnson and Elliott with him. (TOS - Invasion! novel: First Strike)

In 2268, when considering a transfer to The Yard, Spock nominated Hadley to James T. Kirk as an excellent candidate for science officer. (TOS - Constellations short story: "Devices and Desires")

In 2269, Hadley assisted in the salvage of the crash of the Archer-class scout USS Huang Zhong and fought with Donovan Washburn and John Kyle against an assault from the Romulan bird-of-prey ChR Nevathu. (TOS novel: That Which Divides)

That year, in addition to his role as the ship's third-shift navigator, for one month he served as duty officer for gamma shift. Hadley joined Hikaru Sulu as co-pilot aboard the class F shuttlecraft da Gama on a mission to study ruins of a lone city on the planet R-775 I. The two explored the remains of an abandoned alien spacecraft in a cavern. (TOS novel: Allegiance in Exile)

In 2272, Hadley served as helmsman of Timeship One, a joint Starfleet/DTI prototype timeship. The timeship was decommissioned later that year after a duplicate Timeship One returned from the future, with its dying crew explaining they went too far and succumbed to Hawking radiation. (DTI novel: Forgotten History)
