History[edit | edit source]
In 2269, Hixon led the rescue party to save Captain James T. Kirk on the planet Anomaly, arriving aboard a rescue shuttlecraft along with fellow volunteers Ensign Bish Davoff and Lieutenant Alan Huff. His full body armor, helmet, and Type I Ray Gun saved him from a giant eagle attack when he ran over to Kirk's shuttle.
Later, he was wounded by an arrow shot by local hominids and wandered off. He returned the next day having been genetically altered, as the indigenous psychokinetic Arivne removed his ears, eyes, thumbs, tongue, genitalia, and nose, and provided him with a kind of telepathy. The change made him 'happy' because he was able to sense reality directly instead of through the filter of Human physical senses. He suggested that the Vulcan language term arivne would be an appropriate name for the species. As a half-Arivne, Hixon then served as an interpreter between the Enterprise personnel and the Arivne, who were unable to communicate directly with Humans or Vulcans.
