Bio-mimetic gel was a liquid substance. Federation medical professionals classed the substance as highly dangerous and in the wrong hands could be used as a biogenic weapon. As such, it was a controlled substance.

In 2371, the Lethean criminal Altovar attempted to steal bio-mimetic gel from the Infirmary on Deep Space 9. (DS9 episode: "Distant Voices")

As part of Elim Garak’s sourcing of a Cardassian Optolythic data rod to be used to create a fake recording of a Dominion discussion of an attack on Romulan territory, the seller asked for Bio-mimetic gel. Sisko was hesitant, but ordered Julian Bashir to prepare the substance for transit. Bashir was unhappy with the order and planned to notify Starfleet Medical. (DS9 episode: "In the Pale Moonlight")
