A Bion was a genetically engineered construct made by the Romulan Star Empire and saw use in the alternate future timeline of 2400 created by the formation of the red wormhole which started the War of the Prophets.

The creation of Bions was made possible by the use of Grigari technology. Though the Romulan government claimed that Bions were not sentient, it was believed by Starfleet that Bions were not a genetically created slave species but were actually genetically re-engineered prisoners. Nog thought Andorians, Miradorn, Orions, Tiburonians and Klingons had been made into bions.

They were commonly used as workers though some were used as soldiers. Their fingers varied among the different subspecies. (DS9 - Millennium novel: The War of the Prophets)
