Rainbows produced by bivmite colonies in 2268.

A bivmite is a small bioluminescent insect native to the planet M-317.

Specifics[]

Bivmites are extremely sensitive to minute environmental changes, particularly to atmospheric pressure and temperature. They generate bright, colorful lights in a broad spectrum of colors. As they live together in large colonies, their emissions tend to interact, forming dramatic rainbows.

A concentration of bivmite colonies was located in a region not far from the M-317 geological experimental station.

History[]

At least from 2266 to 2268, bivmites formed the landmark known as the Great Rainbow Expanse.

In 2268, James T. Kirk and Spock learned about the bivmites by William Terrens when the three men flew over the landmark in an aircar. (TOS comic: "Murder on the Enterprise")
