Kirk as the Black Knight on Fortenue.

The Black Knight is a medieval character from the legends of King Arthur. The term also referred to a type of chess piece.

History and specifics[]

In 2267 on the Amusement Park planet, a trans-droid representation of the Black Knight on horseback was fashioned out of the fantasies of Doctor Leonard McCoy and Yeoman Tonia Barrows. To her shock, it killed McCoy with a lance, though the planet's computers were able to repair him. James T. Kirk shot the knight with a pistol and Hikaru Sulu examined it, surprised to see it was inanimate. (TOS episode & Star Trek 12 novelization: Shore Leave)

Before she transferred to the USS Potemkin, Barrows sculpted a Black Knight figurine for McCoy. (TOS novel: Faces of Fire)

In 2279 on Fortenue, Kirk was drugged by High Captain Argus with the nectar of the Lotus flower, rendering him susceptible to Argus’ commands. Dressed as the Black Knight, Kirk slapped the Lady Dyana in front of an amnesiac Spock to compel the Vulcan to fight for Dyana's honor in a jousting trial by combat. (TOS comic: "Goodbye to Spock")

In 2369, Worf jousted and fought with a holographic Black Knight in the Arthur Rex holoprogram designed by Reginald Barclay to be a realistic representation of a medieval culture. (TNG novel: Here There Be Dragons)

Legacy[]

In 2293, Kirk recalled the Black Knight encounter while talking to McCoy's ex-wife, Jocelyn Treadway. (TOS novel: Shadows on the Sun)

In 2294, while he was on Askalon V, Sulu recalled the Black Knight encounter. (TOS novel: The Captain's Daughter)
