Blood type is a characteristic of Human red blood cells and is determined by the presence of specific surface antigens.

Blood type designations commonly use two systems for determing blood transfusions: the AB designation and the Rh factor designation. There are four AB types and two RH types, yielding eight types: O+, A+, B+, AB+, O-, A-, B-, AB-. O is another type of designation which is given to blood which doesn't possess any A or B antigens.

After performing a full medical examination of the Human Spock in early 2268, Dr. Leonard McCoy determined that he had Type AB+ blood. (TOS - The New Voyages short story: "Ni Var")
