M16-Bola-Dwarf-Bat

Gnome wielding a bola

A bola is a type of primitive weaponry, a melee weapon that was sometimes used by hunters to snare wild animals.

History[]

During his time in Sarpeidon's past, Zar often used a bola to hunt for his food. (TOS novel: Yesterday's Son)

In 2266, General Kwy of Kujal led an assault on Captain James T. Kirk in which a dozen aircraft fired bolas that whipped around him and dragged him to the ground. (TOS comic: "Dwarf Planet")

In 2270, Spock crafted a set of bolas from creeper vines and fist-sized rocks on Delta Theta III, to help Commander Ari bn Bem escape from a native village. (TAS - Log 9 novelization: Bem)

In 2274, two gnomes armed with bolas beamed aboard the USS Enterprise, appearing to ride atop bats. One bola smashed the transparent aluminum shield between the pad and the console. A security guard remarked that the bola must be made of neutronium. (TOS comic: "There's No Space Like Gnomes'!")

In 2373, Colonel-Mayor Asta-ha invented a two-shot automatic bola pistol. It resembled a crossbow but with two launchers. Each fired one half of a small metal ball, each connected by a cable two meters long. When fired, the balls spread out and rotated, allowing the cable to stretch, spin and wrap around the target. It was one of several low-tech weapons Benjamin Sisko, Miles O'Brien and others developed to try to repel a Cardassian attack on the planet home of the Natives in the Stirnis star system. (DS9 - Rebels novel: The Liberated)
