James T. Kirk with book-tapes

A book-tape was a popular form of entertainment in and around the Federation in the 23rd century.

History and specifics[]

Book-tapes were in vogue aboard the Starfleet starship USS Enterprise in the year 2269. Spock and Leonard McCoy both stocked book-tapes they believed Katalya Tremain would find entertaining. (TOS novel: Vulcan!)

In 2273, James T. Kirk relaxed in his quarters with several book-tapes, including "Garth of Izar on Tactics", "Advanced Poker", "The Orchestral Goldsmith", "The Limerick" and a Horatio Hornblower omnibus by C.S. Forester. (TOS comic: "Aberration on Abaris")

In 2274, Spock owned a book-tape copy of the textbook On the Spacial Limits of Tri-D Chess, which was written by three-dimensional chess master Hathoz. (TOS comic: "Husian Gambit")

In 2364, Tasha Yar tried to relax with a book-tape and music after beaming back from Minos, but both failed to relax her. (TNG novel: Survivors)
