Boqu II was a planet located near the edge of the galaxy in the Alpha or Beta Quadrants, the second planet in orbit of the Boqu star system. It was inhabited by the advanced, non-humanoid Boqus. (TAS - Log Eight novelization: The Eye of the Beholder)
Specifics[]
Boqu II was a terrestrial planet overcast in dense orange clouds, creating a natural greenhouse effect that warmed the surface enough to support life. It was as large as Neptune and radiated more energy than it received. The planet had a light core without heavy metals, with no free water on the surface. Its gravity was 1.5 Gs. The surface was predominantly colored orange and brown, with lakes of liquid ammonia. A city was located at one side of a large valley.
Its atmosphere was not breathable, with numerous vividly demarked cloud layers. From the top, layers were bright orange, gray, and pink. Middle layers were red-orange, maroon, blue-green, and lavish red. Nimbus and cumulus clouds floated above a clear layer just above the surface. During long periods of non-stop atmospheric storms, hurricane-force winds persisted, and the surface was bombarded with lightning strikes.
It had nine moons, including Drasid, Lethiq, Lathoq, Mett One, Mett Two, and Oj.
Life was silicon-based, made of living crystals. Vegetation was orange, yellow and white.
History[]
Thousands of years ago, Boqu II was visited by Lactrans during their era of space travel.
For thousands of years, cosmozoan jawanda were drawn to Boqu II's radiant energy as a food source, but became a pest to Boqu as their presence blocked solar radiation and created sudden climactic shifts on the surface. Boqus developed a device to tow away the creatures, one that maneuvered massive engines on six of the world's moons to form an octahedral gravity cage. Eventually the jawanda stopped coming to Boqu.
In the 2260s decade, long-duration surface storms blocked particular radiations from reaching the surface. Without those energies, certain substances in the Boqus' blood did not break down, causing an epidemic.
In 2269, the Federation starship USS Enterprise sought Boqu II with the aid of several Lactrans on a quest to locate and capture a jawanda. Meyers piloted a shuttlecrawler with an exploratory team to the planet's unusual surface, which could be explored through the use of life support belts. Doctor Leonard McCoy and geologist K'ang Te developed a radiation treatment, similar to a sun lamp, as an antidote for the epidemic. In gratitude, Hivar the Toq joined the Enterprise, driving the planet's moons alongside the ship to seek and capture a jawanda. (TAS - Log Eight novelization: The Eye of the Beholder)
