In the year 2375, Harry Kim and Tom Paris reenacted this episode on USS Voyager's holodeck. Soon, however, real-world photonic aliens began interacting with the holodeck characters. When Doctor Chaotica attacked and killed several of them, believing that they were invaders from the Fifth Dimension, the story diverged the sequence of events from those in the original serial and began a disastrous first contact experience.
