A brown dwarf is a type of stellar classification describing a type of sub-stellar planetary object that is at the bottom threshold of sustaining reaction necessary to be considered an actual star. Despite the object's description as a variety of dwarf star, it can technically also be defined in some conventions of science and astronomy as a gas giant or rogue planet.
History and specifics
In the year 2152, the United Earth Starfleet starship Enterprise NX-01 planned to investigate a brown dwarf's star system. The ship's investigation was interrupted when the NX-01 was infested by a symbiotic lifeform. (ENT episode: "Vox Sola")
The abundance of the element dysprosium in a brown dwarf star was different than regular stars, when factored with terbium, holmium, erbium, and europium, according to an impromptu scientific dissertation given by Data in 2365. (TNG episode: "Manhunt")
In 2367, the USS Enterprise-D made way for a nearby brown dwarf, intending to use its mass to help create a catapult effect to deflect a mirror universe invasion out of the primary universe. (TNG novel: Dark Mirror)
The Federation scoutship USS Hubble was assigned to a brown dwarf survey in sector 19658 around the 2370s decade. (Decipher RPG module: Starships)
The Kestra system in Beta Quadrant counted a brown dwarf among its orbiting objects when surveyed by the USS Titan in 2380. (TTN novel: Orion's Hounds)
The Solanae Dyson Sphere, constructed by the Solanae roughly concurrent with the fall of the Iconian Empire, 200,000 years prior to the 25th century, was centered around a brown dwarf the was part of the Delta Solanae system in the galaxy's Delta Quadrant. Originally, the star was of a different type, transformed into a brown dwarf due to a large-scale industrial accident, which swamped the Dyson sphere with tetryon radiation, forcing the inhabitants to abandon this place.
