The Burke class scout is a type of recon ground vehicle used by the Federation.
They were small, one manned vehicles that patrol ahead of Starfleet battalions for enemy positions and explore new territory for resources. They were unarmed which made these craft rely on their speed to escape destruction from enemy weapons.
It was common for these scouts to be used in geological surveys when a science vehicle was not present. (ST video game: New Worlds)
