The Verelan Vastarum-class (also known as CS2 alphanumerically and translated from Romulan language as Graceful Flyer) was a class V starship of the Romulan fleet in the 23rd century. Classified as a courier and scout, this class entered service by the 2240s decade, prior to reference stardate 1/86. It was named after the elegant verelan vastarum. (FASA RPG module: Romulan Ship Recognition Manual, FASA RPG module: The Romulans: Starfleet Intelligence Manual)

Specifications[]

Ten variants of the class were produced in the 23rd century. All could land, carry up to 1,200 metric tons of cargo (24 SCU), and ferry up to 30 passengers. Not intended for combat, their battle efficiency ranked low among the Romulan fleet. Their maximum emergency speed was warp factor 8.

The type 2 variant weighed 42,100 metric tons. It was powered by one type RWD-1 warp engine and a type RIB-3 impulse engine. It was defended by a type RSD deflector shield and two type RB-2 disruptors placed port and starboard. Its computer core was of type R2M. Types 3, 4, and 5 were similarly configured.

Upgraded computer systems, warp engines, and disruptors appeared in the type 6 variant. This type utilized a type R3M control computer, RWD-2 warp engine, and RB-7 disruptors. It was also one meter longer than previous types. Variants 7, 8, and 9 had similar specifications.

Somewhat improving combat capabilities, the type 10 variant featured uprated power availability, weapons, and shields. It used the same engine type, but with 30 warp power units instead of 23, and 12 impulse power units rather than 5. It used RB-8 disruptors and a type RSE deflector. (FASA RPG module: Romulan Ship Recognition Manual)

Service history and disposition[]

While the fleet's military division employed these ships as couriers, the exploration division used them as scouts for first contact missions. (FASA RPG module: The Romulans: Starfleet Intelligence Manual)

The type 2 variant replaced the original in the mid-2240s decade, on reference stardate 1/8608, with 120 eventually being constructed. In the late 2250s on reference stardate 1/9804, the type 6 was introduced, with 70 being built. At this point, older variants were limited to travel within Romulan borders. The type 10 entered service in the early 2260s, on reference stardate 2/0510. Circa 2/14, in the early 2270s, many were assigned to reserve fleets, and 110 eventually were built. As of the late 2280s decade, 150 Verelan Vastarum vessels served in reserve fleets and at least 90 others had been sold for private use. One each of types 5, 7, and 10 were assigned to duties within the Triangle sector. (FASA RPG module: Romulan Ship Recognition Manual)

An automated Starfleet probe first detected a vessel of this class in the 2250s on reference stardate 1/9502.10, during the Four Years War. It located the starship traveling within the Romulan Neutral Zone and tracked its passage into the Triangle. The event was later noted in the multi-volume reference Intelligence Analysis of the Romulan Star Empire. (FASA RPG modules: The Romulans: Starfleet Intelligence Manual, Star Fleet Intelligence Manual)

In the aftermath of the war, Commodore Sven van Anling would bring up this initial detection during a lecture at Starfleet Academy. He pointed out that it caused a stir, raising concerns that Romulus might become involved in the conflict. (FASA RPG module: The Four Years War)

In the 2270s, on reference stardate 2/1801.18, the Klingon Gold Wing's IKS Gloryseeker, IKS Claw of the Riyity, and IKS Waraxe destroyed two type 6 Verelan Vastarum scouts. (FASA RPG module: The White Flame Starship Combat Scenario Pack mission: "Operation Eradicate: Scenario 1")

In the early 2280s, on reference stardate 2/2113.12, the IKS Defender and IKS Hunter ambushed a convoy of three Monarch-class freighters, two Verelan Vastarum scouts, and a Reemea-class destroyer. One freighter was destroyed, but the two scouts managed to return fire and damage the attackers' shields. (FASA RPG module: The White Flame Starship Combat Scenario Pack mission: "Starting Off With a Bang")

In 2284, the USS Niwen intercepted a transmission from a Neutral Zone patrol group consisting of two Graceful Flyer scouts and a Vas Hatham-class bird-of-prey. Sub-commander S'Laf testified during his Right of Statement that he was aware of the existence of a task force made up of two Graceful Flyer scouts and a Vas'deletham-class cruiser heading away from the installation he commanded. (FASA RPG module: Where Has All the Glory Gone?)

Starfleet captured a type 10 Verelan Vastarum-class starship in the late 23rd century. (FASA RPG module: Romulan Ship Recognition Manual)
