The CST Beowulf was a 23rd century Federation combat support tender starship under the command of Captain Ray Austin in the late 2270s.
Service history and disposition[]
In 2278, Starfleet assigned Beowulf to the Belle Terre Colonial Expedition. For the expedition, the crew's responsibilities were to install universal docking collars on all participating vessels and to inspect general technologies such as bulkheads, antigravs, and cables under the supervision of Montgomery Scott. As a repair tender crew, ship's personnel had been trained as a coordinated unit to conduct emergency starship repairs.
In 2279, when the convoy departed, Beowulf and USS Republic were assigned to rear guard positions by Rear Admiral James T. Kirk, specifically to watch for Orion aggression. When the convoy faced a Kauld attack, the starships formed a defensive sphere around the civilian ships with Beowulf beside Norfolk Rebel and Colunga. Beowulf's plasma containment took a direct hit during the battle. The vessel broke formation on impulse, crippled, with many casualties. After the battle, Beowulf was taken in tow. In July 2279 at Belle Terre, Beowulf could still maneuver with impulse power. She joined an emergency effort of all available colonial vessels to tow a small moon into the Quake Moon. (TOS - New Earth novel: Belle Terre)
