The Capella class[1] a 23rd century[1] Federation[1] starship type, a survey vessel[1] and escort[2] class in Starfleet[1] service by the 2260s[3] decade. Ships of the class had a registry number starting with the prefix NCC-S[1]. (DTI novel: Forgotten History, TOS novel: The Captain's Oath, Last Unicorn RPG module: The Price of Freedom)
History and specifications[]
The USS Somerville (NCC-S471) was one of the assets active in the Vega system in the early 2260s. At the time, the Capella-class served as a mid-sized workhorse craft and was shared between different Starfleet research, defense and operations units. In 2262, the Somerville was attached to an archaeological station at Vega. In that year, the Somerville rushed to aid the imperiled Titania-class scout USS Caliban. (TOS novel: The Captain's Oath)
Ships of this class were considered old by the 2270s decade. One Capella-class surveyor, the USS Hypatia (NCC-S415), was attached to the Federation Department of Temporal Investigations at that time. In 2272, the Hypatia operated near Warlock Station. Two years later, it was briefly pulled by Vedalan technology into the timeline of the Vulcan Protectorate. (DTI novel: Forgotten History)
In the 24th century, the Capella-class was an escort design that, by the turn of the 2370s, was considered to be a "standby" for fleet escort service, much as the Pollux-class escort also was at the time. Both classes were named for stars; Capella and Pollux, respectively. (Last Unicorn RPG module: The Price of Freedom)
