Bajoran cpt-2

Bajoran captain insignia.

Captain is an military rank in a number of historical military organizations, including infantry. In organizations that use infantry ranks, a captain is ranked between a first lieutenant and a major, and in line service would command a company. This military rank is usually quite equivalent to the naval and space service rank of full lieutenant, but across alien systems there are some alternate uses. The Romulan language rank erei'riov is called subcommander, but is considered equivalent to captain or naval lieutenant commander. (TOS - Rihannsu novel: The Romulan Way)

This rank of captain was used in three branches of the United States of America's armed forces—specifically the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps. It was later used by United Earth's Military Assault Command Operations, the Federation's Starfleet Marines, and the Bajoran Militia. (TOS episode & Star Trek 2 novelization: Tomorrow is Yesterday, TNG episode & novelization: Encounter at Farpoint, DS9 episode: "Little Green Men", VOY episode: "The Killing Game", ST reference: The Star Trek Encyclopedia, DS9 - Worlds of DS9 novel: Bajor: Fragments and Omens)

In his first encounters with the crew of the Federation starship USS Enterprise in the year 2364, one of the guises adopted by Q was that of a 20th century captain in the United States Marines Corps. (TNG novel: Encounter at Farpoint; TNG comic: "Q Factor")
