Carl Wentworth was a 23rd century Human man, a well-known Federation psychiatrist.

Biography[]

Known for conducting ego-focused seminars, Dr. Wentworth's reputation ranged from teacher to cult leader to con man. He founded the "Anti-Apologists Movement" based on his therapeutic approach of substituting enlightened self-interest for patients' feelings of guilt.

In the 2260s or early 2270s, he established a clinic on Andronicus. While there, he studied mental manipulation and other skills from archives left by an extinct civilization on the planet. He became an expert in their method of mind control, and even tested the techniques on his assistant Andrea Manning, who unknowingly gained the ability manifest solid objects and imaginary entities from her imagination. If Wentworth hadn't been insane before, he was now megalomaniacal, intending to enslave and dominate the galaxy under the pretext of spreading universal freedom.

In 2273 the Federation Council closed his facility, as its dome was leaking Berthold radiation. The starship USS Enterprise picked up its staff and patients for transfer to Starbase 28. With relative ease through mind conrol, Wentworth inspired insubordination and mutiny among long-serving, loyal Starfleet officers such as Hikaru Sulu and Nyota Uhura. Instead of the starbase, at Sulu's suggestion the ship was diverted toward Drexler II, where Wentworth thought he could begin his reign. He even managed to temporarily stop Captain James T. Kirk in his tracks with mind control, but Kirk overcame him and knocked the man unconscious. Wentworth was confined and handed over to a rehabilitation facility. (TOS comic: "... Like a Woman Scorned!")
