Carlos Durban was a 23rd century Human man. He was a Starfleet biologist who served aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise in the 2260s decade under the command of Captain James T. Kirk.
History[]
Durban was earnestly fascinated with xenobiology and dreamed of leading expeditions to explore strange new worlds.
In the year 2267, he analyzed a variety of fauna on Diad II in the biology laboratory, organizing specimen cases with all sorts of small animals, even butterflies. Unknown to him, however, the butterflies had evolved a group mind with a strong fantasy life, and their stray thoughts allowed Durban to experience seemingly realistic hallucinations. In his mind, he visited a remote world and encountered an intelligent tentacled creature in a dark pit which strangled him. He succumbed and died in real life. Leonard McCoy could find no explanation for the man's death until learning about the butterflies. (TOS - The New Voyages short story: "The Winged Dreamers")
