Support carriers

Khitomer Alliance support carriers.

A carrier was a type of terrestrial craft or starship that deployed and recovered large quantities of small craft such as shuttles and fighters. Unlike mother ships in general, combat was a carrier's primary mission role. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

History and specifications[]

In the 20th century, Humans on Earth operated nuclear-powered, seagoing aircraft carriers. (TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: The Voyage Home)

In the 2150s decade, the Romulan Star Navy used T'varo-class birds-of-prey as carriers and tenders to deploy sublight Nei'hrr-class attack raptors at the edge of star systems during the Earth-Romulan War. (ENT - The Romulan War novel: Beneath the Raptor's Wing)

During the Federation-Klingon War of 2405-2410, the Klingon Defense Force favored carrier classes compared to Starfleet. In the 25th century, carrier ships had dedicated hangar bays separate from conventional shuttlebays to support squadrons of fighter pets. The deployable support craft could be swapped out. Smaller support craft could be operated as shuttlecraft, while larger carriers would host fully-fledged starships of the frigate type. (STO - Klingon War missions: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock", "The Hunt is On")

The retrofitted dorsal carrier XRT-55D was commissioned in the year 3125. (ENT episode: "Future Tense")

Planetbound subtypes[]

Aircraft carrier[]

In the 20th century, Humans on Earth operated seagoing aircraft carriers, like the nuclear-powered USS Enterprise. (TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: The Voyage Home)

Starship subtypes[]

Battle carrier[]

A battle carrier has two hangar bays to launch wings of fighters and/or frigates from. In the early 25th century, the difference between carriers and battle carriers were the superior maneuverability but weaker shielding of the latter. In 2409, the Kar'Fi-class battle carrier was in service of the Fek'Ihri Horde and the Klingon Empire. (STO - Fek'Ihri Return mission: "Afterlife")

Dreadnought carrier[]

The dreadnought carrier was a starship type introduced by the Dominion by the 24th century. It added a pair of hangar bays to heavily-armed dreadnoughts, with operational support by a tactical bridge officer with the rank of commander. Their initial tier 5 Jem'Hadar dreadnought carrier was complemented by a tier 6 counterpart in the early 25th century. (STO website: Season 7 Dev Blog : New Dominion Lock Box and Lobi Ships)

Flight-deck carrier[]

The flight deck carrier was a starship classification introduced to the Klingon Defense Force by the Orion Syndicate aroun 2409. Their intent was to hybridise cruiser classes with carriers by adding a flight deck. Inspired by their origin, flight-deck classes in the Khitomer Alliance were then often developed by a particular member species, rather than the government's primary military. (STO - Empire mission: "The Hunt is On")

Miracle worker flight-deck carrier[]

Miracle worker flight deck carriers combined miracle worker starships with flight deck carriers. Their first iteration were Constitution- and D7-class temporal miracle-worker flight-deck carriers, based on 2250s-era technology and, upon their reintroduction in 2410, capable of launching more hangar pets than any existing carrier class. (STO - Age of Discovery mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Their carrier capacity was superseded in 2411 by the new support carriers. (STO website: House Divided : Cross Faction Support Carrier Bundle)

Science carrier[]

Science carriers were a type of carrier that involved a science officer with the rank of commander in its operations. The Vo'Qu-class, for a time the Klingon Defense Force's largest starship class, was classified as tier 5 science carrier in 2409. (STO - Empire mission: "The Hunt is On")

Together with Starfleet's Atrox-class carrier, formed the basis for the Khitomer Alliance support carriers launched in 2411. (STO website: House Divided : Cross Faction Support Carrier Bundle)

Strike wing escort[]

Strike wing escorts, named heavy escort carriers upon introduction, were heavy escorts modified to house a single hangar bay. This carrier variant was introduced by Starfleet with the Armitage-class heavy escort carrier in 2409. Older Starfleet heavy escort classes, such as the Akira-class, were also capable of serving as heavy escort carriers. (STO website: Season 6: Under Siege s: , Season 6 Dev Blog #5: Heavy Escort Carrier)

Support carrier[]

The support carrier was a new, tier 6 carrier category introduced by the Khitomer Alliance during the Klingon Civil War of 2411. While the support carrier was based on the Atrox- and Vo'Quv-class science carriers of the 2400s decade, but could deploy and control more hangar pets than any preceding Alliance starship class, out-competing the temporal flight deck carriers.
