Castanuela was a 23rd century Human member of Starfleet who served as crewmember of the Federation starship USS Enterprise under the command of Captain James T. Kirk in the 2260s.

In 2270, Castanuela was a patient of Minnie Moskowitz's psychiatrist, who conducted an interview session with Castanuela as part of her procedure for psychiatric evaluations. Other starship personnel under her care included Agbadudu, Bartholomew, Garvey, Harrison, Ix and Minnie Moskowitz. She filed Castanuela's microtape recording of the interview under C. (TOS short story: "The Girl Who Controlled Gene Kelly's Feet")
