Cerium (symbol Ce) is a chemical element, atomic number 58 on the periodic table.

Characteristics and history

Cerium has an atomic mass of 140.12, and was discovered by Humans on Earth's European continent for the first time by scientists working in Sweden and Germany in the year 1803. This highly reactive metal is part of the lanthanide series of heavy elements. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)

One of the Federation's largest sources of cerium in the 23rd century was the mining colony on planet Janus VI. (TOS episode: "The Devil in the Dark")
