The ChR Bloodwing (ChR 63)[1] was a 23rd century Romulan starship, a Vas Hatham-class warbird[1] in Romulan Imperial Fleet service in the 2270s decade, under the command of khre'Riov Ael i-Mhiessan t'Rllaillieu. Its voyages led to the Romulan Civil War.[2] (TOS - Rihannsu novels: My Enemy, My Ally, Swordhunt, Honor Blade)

History and specifications[]

The ChR Bloodwing was named after a bird native to Romulus.

Over the course of three years, the Bloodwing part of the Romulan ships frequently assigned to patrol the Romulan Neutral Zone. This led to confrontations with the USS Enterprise of the Federation. The two ship's captains came to admire their skills on the battlefield, and did not build animosity beyond the circumstance of serving opposing nations. Captain James T. Kirk was particularly impressed during the Battle of Alpha Trianguli, when the Bloodwing fooled the Enterprise crew by evacuating and automating a pair of Rihannsu cruisers.

When t'Rllaillieu learned of the Sunseed project and the experiments with Vulcan telepathy at Leaveri V, she tried to sway the Romulan senate against the consequences of these projects but was reassigned to the ChR Cuirass, sent to patrol the Outmarches to get rid of her. Her first officer and son, Subcommander Tafv tr'Rllaillieu, inherited command of the Bloodwing.

Before she left, Ael had the elderly Bloodwing secretly fitted with Klingon gunnery augmentation conduits that improved the Warbird-class ship's phasers.

On stardate 0304.6, in the year 2275, the two ship commanders conspired to destroy the dangerous research. Ael abandoned the Cuirass and returned aboard her personal Imperial courier Hsaaja to the Bloodwing. The Bloodwing then chased the Cuirass, reprogrammed to appear as Klingon cruiser IKS Ehhak across the Neutral Zone towards the Enterprise. The Bloodwing destroyed the Cuirass and rendezvoused with the Enterprise.

Ael conspired with Kirk. The pair of ships faked a battle in which Bloodwing seemingly captured Enterprise. The route back to Romulus passed Levaeri V. Romulan Command dispatched a three-ship escort consisting of the ChR Battlequeen, ChR Javelin and ChR Rea's Helm.

During the transit of the five ships, an uprising was faked on Enterprise, and the three escorts were destroyed by the conspirators while Bloodwing pretended to battle Enterprise.

The two ships arrived at Leaveri V and boarded the research station. Tafv betrayed his commander and launched a boarding action to seize Enterprise for himself. Crew loyal to Ael helped the Starfleet crew kill the invaders. Meanwhile, the joint boarding parties of both ship eliminated the research station personnel, recovered Vulcan brain matter, and the recently captured crew of the USS Intrepid. Hot antimatter of the Bloodwing helped jumpstart Intrepid's engines, and the three ships departed the site of the Levaeri incident.

On stardate 2816.3, the Bloodwing dropped its ChR starship prefix to commence service as a rogue vessel. Ael considered whether they should turn to mercenary work. (TOS - Rihannsu novel: My Enemy, My Ally)

Later, the Bloodwing landed on the roof of the Hall of State in Ra'tleihfi on Romulus to rescue Enterprise officer Leonard McCoy from a kangaroo court. Ael personally entered the senate and reproached the Romulan leadership for abandoning honor. On an impulse, Ael fetched Sword of S'task from the Empty Chair. The Bloodwing absconded with the priceless artifact and returned McCoy to the Federation. (TOS - Rihannsu novel: The Romulan Way)

A year later, in 2276, the Bloodwing met Enterprise again in the Hamal system, before traveling together to 15 Trianguli. There, the two ships came under attack from five Romulan ships. (TOS - Rihannsu novel: Swordhunt)

The Bloodwing let the Free Rihannsu Movement to restore honor to the way of the Romulan Star Empire. Its actions sparked the Romulan Civil War, from which the FRM emerged victorious, leading to a political compromise. (TOS - Rihannsu novels: Honor Blade, The Empty Chair)
