Chameleon was a 23rd century Federation cargo ship owned by trader Cyrano Jones. It became the prototype of the Chameleon-class starship.
Specifications and service history[]
Jones refitted an inexpensive, outdated scout, adding a breakaway cargo pod amidships and turning it into a cargo ship. (FASA RPG module: Spacelanes: The Magazine of Interstellar Trade)
His vessel weighed 2,000 metric tons, 2,750 with the addition of the cargo pod. It was capable of cruising at warp five, warp three with the pod. Its emergency speed was warp 8.5, or warp six with the pod. (FASA RPG - Adventure Book module: Again, Troublesome Tribbles)
Jones patented his ship's redesign. By the mid-2240s decade, he sold the patents to a major shipyard which turned it into a popular starship class which entered service on reference stardate 1/8530. (FASA RPG modules: Spacelanes: The Magazine of Interstellar Trade, Trader Captains and Merchant Princes)
In 2270, Jones brought supplies to Genetics Research Station 17 on Aleph III with Chameleon. When the Federation chose to evacuate the facility, Jones headed out with researcher Daniel Lane and technician Randolph Leon to see how much equipment they could fit in his cargo hold. A Klingon landing party near the ship ambushed the three men, killing Lane and Leon. Jones fled on a gravsled and rejoined station personal to defend the facility against the Klingons. (FASA RPG - Adventure Book module: Again, Troublesome Tribbles)
- Chameleon's deck plans were published in "Again, Troublesome Tribbles". FASA intended Chameleon to be the one-man vessel Spock described Jones owning in TOS episode: "The Trouble With Tribbles". However, DS9 episode: "Trials and Tribble-ations" showed that Jones had brought a different ship to Deep Space Station K-7 that time, the Spacematic.
