Service history[]
Cyrano Jones refitted an inexpensive, outdated scout, adding a breakaway cargo pod amidships and turning it into a small freighter. He patented the redesign, later selling the patents to a major shipyard which turned it into a starship class. (FASA RPG module: Spacelanes: The Magazine of Interstellar Trade)
It became a popular class ship for independent merchants. The price for a new Chameleon-class vessel was 6.67 million credits. It entered service in the mid-2240s decade, on reference stardate 1/8530. By the late 2280s, 833 had been built. 420 were privately owned, 282 were in use by Starfleet as one-man scouts, and 131 had been destroyed or lost.
