Chan was a 23rd century Human, a Starfleet cadet at Starfleet Academy in the year 2251. He often shared his mealtime with Gary Mitchell and Covaleski. Over a meal in the Academy cafeteria, he and Covaleski told Mitchell about the incident between James T. Kirk and Benjamin Finney aboard the USS Republic. This led Mitchell to seek Kirk out as a friend. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Republic)
