The Chekov class was a 25th century Federation starship type, a tier 6-rated intel science warship class derived from the 24th century Springfield-class, in Starfleet and Khitomer Alliance service from the 2410s decade. (STO website: Both Worlds: 14th Anniversary Bundle!)
History and technical specifications[]
Ships of the Springfield class fought in the Battle of Wolf 359 against the Borg in the year 2367. (STO - Task Force Operation mission: "Battle of Wolf 359")
The Challenger class was an early modular starship type developed by Starfleet. It served as an early destroyer but was classified as a nimble light cruiser. The class underwent offensive retrofitting before the Battle of Wolf 359 against the Borg in the year 2367. The USS Chekov was an evolution of the 2360s-era Springfield hull and was in service from 2411. As an intel science warship, the Chekov class combined the characteristics of an intel starship with those of science vessels and warships. (STO website: Both Worlds: 14th Anniversary Bundle!)
In that year, the Alliance joined forces with the Aetherian Concordium due to a multiversal campaign by the Borg Kingdom. The Borg originated from the mirror universe and invaded the primary universe and fluidic space. The mirror universe Borg required advanced technology to counter. (STO - Kings & Queens mission: "Scorpion's Abyss")
Typically for starships of its time period, an Chekov-class vessel was equipped with phaser beam arrays and photon torpedo launchers. It was equipped with a impulse engines, warp core and quantum slipstream drive, enabling it to reach impulse, warp, transwarp and quantum slipstream velocities. Cloaking was not an innate ability but various mechanisms could be installed to serve as a cloaking device. The hull was modular and could be modified at shipyards interfaces operated by New Romulus Shipyards, Klingon Defense Force Order of Builders and Starfleet Shipyards Operations at Alliance facilities across the Milky Way Galaxy. (STO - Both Worlds missions: "Explore the Flotilla", "First City", "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
Specifically, a ship of the class included four forward weapon mounts and three aft. Bridge officer stations allowed for a commander on double duty as science officer and intel officer, a lieutenant commander also on double duty in engineering and temporal operations, a tactical commander, an ensign and a lieutenant of any department, respectively. The Chekov class could equip dual cannons. As an intel starship, it included the gather intel mechanic, as a science vessel the Chekov was capable of subsystem targeting. As an Alliance warship, a battle-hardened ship benefitted from enhanced particle generators, advanced shield systems, enhanced restorative circuitry, reactive shield technology and threaded particle projectors. The USS Chekov was the first ship equipped with the fusion cutting beam. This console created a subspace partition in the shape of a thin column equivalent to the environment in the core of a main-sequence star. The Chekov was also a science warship fitted with an inbuilt tunneling graviton lance, which could cause physical damage to its target. (STO website: Both Worlds: 14th Anniversary Bundle!)
