The Cheyenne class was a 24th century Federation starship type, a quad-nacelle cruiser[1][3] in Starfleet service from the 2350s decade[2]. (ST reference: The Star Trek Encyclopedia)
One of the more famous ships of this class was the USS Ahwahnee, which was lost at the Battle of Wolf 359. (TNG episode: "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II")
In the mirror universe, the Cheyenne-class heavy cruiser was operated by the Imperial Starfleet of the Terran Empire. (STO website: The Sphere: Hirogen Lockbox and Lobi Ships)
History and specifications
The Cheyenne-class was a 24th century design of light cruiser, consisting of a saucer section derived from the Galaxy-class project with four warp nacelles attached by branching pylons to the aft saucer. (TOSC Issue 108: "Cheyenne class")
In the 25th century, the Cheyenne-class would continue in Starfleet service as a modernized heavy cruiser, generally commanded by an officer with the rank of commander. By this time the Cheyenne, like its parent design, had been the basis for several other starships, most notably the Dakota- and Stargazer-classes. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
The Cheyenne class launched in the year 2350. The shipyards that served as primary production facilities were the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards at Mars, the Antares Fleet Yards at Antares and the Proxima Fleet Yards at Proxima. The USS Cheyenne was constructed by the Advanced Starship Design Bureau at Utopia Planitia with experimental warp coil technology. Because the class proved versatile, Starfleet ordered three vessels built. The USS Ahwahnee launched in 2360 and was operated by United Earth. Unlike the 23rd century Constellation-class quad-nacelle design, the Cheyenne class did not require to alternate operations between nacelle pairs. An upgraded subclass of the Cheyenne was the Dakota-class, launched in 2405. (Star Trek Adventures RPG module: Utopia Planitia Starfleet Sourcebook)
A ship of the class was approximately 360 meters long and housed a crew of 320. Top speed was rated at warp 9.6. Ship weaponry included phaser emitters and photon torpedo launchers. (TOSC Issue 108: "Cheyenne class")
The Cheyenne class was capable of performing saucer separation. (STO - Task Force Operation mission: "Battle of Wolf 359")
Class variations
In the early 25th century, the design of the Cheyenne-class heavy escort allowed its commanding officer to choose from different hull liveries, which could be modified further. Due to the ship's modular design, hull components were easily exchangeable with those of other four-nacelled heavy cruisers. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance, the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion. (STO missions: "Coliseum", "Cold Storage", "Boldly They Rode")

Background
The Ahwahnee model was built for the battle sequence in "The Best of Both Worlds" and later described to Star Trek fans by Michael Okuda's appearances at conventions, where he showed slides with images of the behind-the-scenes models.
Apocrypha
The ebook The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon, published by Last Unicorn Games after they had lost their Star Trek license lists the USS Periyar and USS Utrecht as Cheyenne-class vessels. LUG's Ship Recognition Manual also lists the USS Paiute and USS Haida.
