Cholera was a Human illness caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The disease was usually associated with inadequate water sanitation processes, and transmitted by the ingestion of contaminated water or food products. The disease had several epidemic periods throughout the 19th and into the 20th century which claimed thousands of lives. Once the industrial growth of the 20th century was underway, however, outbreaks were generally limited to under-developed parts of Earth.

Cholera was a major problem for San Francisco in the 1890s. (ST - New Worlds, New Civilizations short story: "At Times of Peril")

Also during the 1890s, deaths associated with the cholera epidemic in San Francisco were used to conceal the activities of the Devidians. In order to sustain themselves, they traveled from their native Devidia II in the 24th century to 19th century Earth to obtain neural energy from humans living in that period. This extraction resulted in the deaths of hundreds of humans. (TNG episodes: "Time's Arrow", "Time's Arrow, Part II")
