Christa McAuliffe was a 20th century Human woman, a teacher and NASA astronaut.

Biography[]

On 28 January 1986, McAuliffe served as a payload specialist aboard the space shuttle Challenger. Tragically, at 11:39 hours, shortly after lifting off from Launch Complex 39, Pad B near Cape Canaveral, Challenger exploded with a loss of all hands. (DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: Twilight)

Legacy[]

A memorial plaque at the launch site commemorated McAuliffe and her fellow crewmembers. An inscription read, "This day seven explorers sailed on a flame over the edge of the world". (DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: Twilight)

McAuliffe's Challenger mission patch, bearing her name, was displayed in Zefram Cochrane's Crash & Burn bar in 2063. (TNG movie: Star Trek: First Contact)

The Federation starship USS McAuliffe and at least three Starfleet shuttlecraft have been named in her honor. (DS9 comic: "Frozen Boyhood", TLE novel: One Constant Star, ST reference: Ships of the Line 2006)

The Christa McAuliffe Annex at Starfleet Academy was also named for her. (TOS novel: Preserver)

On 5 July 1986, Roberta Lincoln retrieved Pavel Chekov's lost communicator from Shannon O'Donnel, who had hoped that reverse engineering the advanced technology at Area 51 might lead to advancements to prevent accidents like the one which cost McAuliffe her life. On 5 January 1996, during a rushed countdown for the SS Botany Bay in Nevada, O'Donnel reflected on McAuliffe, Gus Grissom and others who had died tragically in America's space program. (TOS - The Eugenics Wars novel: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 2)

In 2376, Elias Vaughn experienced a recreation of Cape Canaveral as he'd seen it in his youth, and recalled his emotional impact upon seeing McAuliffe's name on the Challenger plaque. (DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: Twilight)
