Memory Beta, non-canon Star Trek Wiki

A cicada is a species of insect native to Earth.

Cicadas live underground as larvae for most of their life, only tunneling to live in daylight for a few days, then burrowing down again. (TOS - Log Two novelization: The Lorelei Signal)

The USS Cicada, RNS Cicada and the Cicada sector were named after the insect.

History[]

James T. Kirk and Teilani heard the whine of cicadas coming from a grove of chestnut trees near his family home in Riverside, Iowa, after having been attacked by a pair of Klingon-Romulan hybrids. (TOS novel: The Ashes of Eden)
