Calligar city

A Calligar city.

A city was a type of settlement, a large inhabited area usually located on a planet's surface, and usually a part of a larger state or nation, made up of both residential and commercial sectors. An example was Gronim City on Denobula. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Live by the Code)

History and specifics[]

Cities were generally named. Some also had poetic or nicknames. The governments of states and planets were often placed in cities, which where then referred to as capitals. This included the Federation capital Paris, "City of Lights", and the First City on Qo'noS. (ST novel: Articles of the Federation)

While most cities were found on planets, an aerial city was located in a planetary atmosphere. Examples of floating or cloud cities included Stratos on Ardana, and Laputa on Hearthwind. (TOS novel: The Captain's Oath)

The Aenar lived in underground cities, beneath the ice sheet of Andoria. (ENT episode: "The Aenar")

Cities could be defined by their architectural styles, which could be affected by catastrophes or war. (DS9 novel: A Stitch in Time)

Due to their strategic importance, cities could become embroiled or even targets in conflicts, e.g. when the Dominion targeted Lakarian City for destruction late in the Dominion War. (DS9 episode & novelization: What You Leave Behind)

In the 23rd century, the people of Zarta used city builders to construct their cities, but the machines went berserk and almost covered the entire planet in cities. (TOS comic: "Invasion of the City Builders")

In 2409, the Romulan Republic decided to build a city on New Romulus were proto-Romulans first landed on this world in the 4th century. (STO - New Romulus mission: "Staging Area")
