Clan Phelsht was an ancient Vulcan clan that existed in the time after the planet Vulcan had been scorched into a desert world by a solar flare.
History[]
The clan initially hoarded the great gift of the Pelasht wellspring (which they controlled) to themselves, not sharing it with any of the other "clans that wandered in that empty waste", all of whom "had at one time or another thought of taking" for their own. "Some had tried. But clan Phelsht had grown very strong and numerous and they easily beat off any clan that tried to take their high ground with its sweet water." (TOS novel: Spock's World)
Finally, the Oldest Mother of the clans of the sands "had declared that there were to be no more attempts on Phelsht". (TOS novel: Spock's World)
Despite this, the Clan of the Eye eventually stormed the Phelsht wellspring and captured it for themselves. To avoid being completely slaughtered and to gain access to the Eye’s advantages, the Oldest Mother of the surviving Phelsht agreed to form a strategic alliance with the Eye. The Clan of the Eye went on to take her on as the second oldest mother, and the alliance of the clans made both greater than they had been apart. (TOS novel: Spock's World)
Territory[]
Their traditional territory was the area containing a wellspring of the same name (which would later become the Pelasht). (TOS novel: Spock's World)
According to legend, the wellspring was created by the Distant One, Slheya the Great, chief of mountains. Pelasht and its wellspring "had been raised up by one of the gods of the sand" as a gift to the mortal he’d bound himself to. "No mere muddy puddle", the spring "rose up from deep in the stone of the mountain" to produce cold clear water "without muck or weed" that was "sweet to the taste"; "and there was so much of it that it ran down the side of the mountain into the sand, and plants grew there" "almost as tall as a man" "despite the scorching sun".
