A class-2 probe or more specifically class II sensor probe was a type of probe used by the Federation Starfleet in the 24th century.
History[]
In the year 2374, Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise-E ordered the use of a class-2 probe to scout conditions inside the galactic barrier prior to an attempt to breach it. However, soon after launch, the probe was attacked by the Calamarain and had to be beamed back aboard. Later on, Lieutenant Barclay was assigned by chief engineer La Forge to study its remains, in hopes of finding clues on how to fight the Calamarain. (TNG - The Q Continuum novel: Q-Space)
Technical specifications[]
The probes were essentially modified class-1 probes and had a range of 4x105 kilometers. They were powered by a vectored deuterium micro fusion engine which could propel them at warp 0.65. In addition to the equipment found on the class-1s, these probes had enhanced long-range particle- and field-detectors and imaging systems. By 2374, these probes were outfitted with bioneural gel packs to process data. (TNG - The Q Continuum novel: Q-Space)
