In Federation Starfleet's numeric nebula classification[1], a class 1 nebula was a type of gas cloud in interstellar space. (VOY episode: "Mortal Coil")
History[]
A class-1 nebula was encountered by the wayward Federation Intrepid-class starship USS Voyager on stardate 51449.2 in the 2374 on the ship's return trip to the Alpha Quadrant. The crew sent a Type-6 shuttlecraft to investigate. A lightning-like beam of protomatter hit the shuttle. Its deflector shield flared up, then Chef Neelix was struck by the protomatter and died. Seven of Nine used her nanoprobes to revive Neelix.
Voyager passed through the nebula after visiting the Tau system on stardate 51386, encountered the Dream World on the other side on stardate 51471. (ST reference: Star Charts)
In the aftermath of the deadly incident in the class-1 nebula and his revival Seven, Neelix's missing lung regenerated and replaced his Ocampan transplant organ. (VOY - Myriad Universes - Infinity's Prism novella: Places of Exile)
When Starfleet returned to the Delta Quadrant in 2379, the class-1 nebula between the Alsuran Empire and Krenim Imperium in the Alsuran sector[2] was one of the areas of interest. (Star Trek Adventures module: Delta Quadrant Sourcebook)
Alternate timeline[]
In an alternate timeline, the crew of the Delta Coalition starship Voyager learned of the incident in the class-1 nebula, and the subsequent regeneration of Neelix's lung. In that timeline, Kes replaced the organ and Voyager did not visit the nebula in the first place. (VOY - Myriad Universes - Infinity's Prism novella: Places of Exile)
