Class 2 nebula 2379

Stellar neighborhood of a class-2 nebula in 2379.

In Federation Starfleet's numeric nebula classification[1], a class 2 nebula was a type of gas cloud in interstellar space. The properties of such a nebula hampered the effectiveness of Federation starship sensors. (VOY episode & novelization: Equinox)

History[]

Nova class shields

The USS Equinox.

A class-2 nebula was encountered by the wayward Federation Nova-class starship USS Equinox in the 2376 on the ship's return trip to the Alpha Quadrant. First officer Maxwell Burke detected the nebula less than one lightyear from the ship's position, and advised Captain Rudolph Ransom to evade USS Voyager there. Ransom decided to surrender to Captain Kathryn Janeway and her Intrepid-class ship instead, forcing Burke to mutiny against his captain. (VOY episode & novelization: Equinox)

Soon after, Voyager visited FGC-530007 on stardate 53000, just outside the boundaries of Burke's class-2 nebula. (ST reference: Star Charts)
