A class I gas supergiant planet, also called class 9 planet[1], was a planetary classification, a gas supergiant (a supergiant gas giant) planet with a very tenuous surface made up of gaseous hydrogen and hydrogen compounds. (ST reference: Star Charts)

The Klingons referred to this planet type as Q'tahL-class gas giant. (ENT episode: "Sleeping Dogs")

History and specifications[]

In the 2150s decade, United Earth Starfleet referred to gas giants of this type as class 9 planet. In the year 2151, Captain Jonathan Archer of the United Earth ship Enterprise NX-01 told his Vulcan first officer T'Pol that none of the gas giants in his native Sol system were class 9 planets.

An Enterprise landing party attempted to rescue the Klingon bird of prey IKS Somraw, stranded in the atmosphere of such a planet. Communications officer and linguist Hoshi Sato found in the ship's database that the Klingons referred to this type of planet as Q'tahL-class gas giant. (ENT episode: "Sleeping Dogs")

Q'Tahl was a Klingon-controlled planet located near the Taurus Reach in the 2260s. Q'Tahl was the home of the Klingon 5th Battle Fleet in 2268. (VAN - Declassified novella: The Stars Look Down)

Baseras

Baseras in 2411.

By 2378, Federation science referred to these as class I gas supergiant. (ST reference: Star Charts)

The ninth planet of the B'hava'el system, Baseras, was a class I supergiant. (Coda novel: The Ashes of Tomorrow)

In the 2400s, Koolhaas Prime was a class I gas supergiant in Federation space. (STO - Patrol the Risa Sector mission: "Koolhaas System Patrol")
