A clothing transporter was a device that could beam clothing on or off an individual. In the the mid 23rd century on Federation starships such as the refit USS Enterprise clothing transporters were built into sonic showers.

Lieutenant Ilia used a clothing transporter on the Enterprise, as did V'Ger's probe when it assumed her form. (TOS movie: The Motion Picture)

Clothing transporters never gained wide acceptance in the Federation. This was due to a fear that the clothes would be beamed underneath the skin - even though safeguards were built in to prevent this. More importantly the transporter did not take into account that humanoid proportions could change within a short period of time. As a result often clothes beamed on to people were comfortable at first, but several hours later were often unbearably tight. (TOS novel: Ex Machina)
