The cockroach was an insect native to Earth, which commonly bred in unsanitary conditions, and was notoriously hard to eradicate.

Roberta Lincoln had to deal with cockroaches in her East Village apartment in 1969. She found the lack of cockroaches one of the high points of the quarters found on a Constitution-class starship. (TOS novel: Assignment: Eternity)
