Ensign Colin B. Fortine was the science officer of the UNSS Bonaventure under Captain Hadrian H. Huckleby. On stardate 0/6509, he was assigned to lead a party to make first contact with the natives of Axanar. Half of his eight-man team was killed in an ambush, and the rest taken prisoner. After learning their language and establishing communications, Fortine indicated that he and his men were from another world, which caused the Axanar to believe they were gods. When it came time to return to his ship, the chief offered to sacrifice some of his warriors. To prevent the killing, Fortine was forced to promise to return one day.
