The command module was the section of a spaceship in use in the 20th and early 21st centuries which contained the primary cockpit and control area. (VOY episode: "One Small Step"; TOS novels: Prime Directive, Captain's Blood)

In the 23rd century, the command module referred to the area of a Federation starship's bridge which contained the helm, navigation console, astrogator, chronometer, and command chair. (ST reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual, LUG reference: Star Trek: The Original Series Core Game Book, TOS short story: "The Sleeping God", TOS novels: Planet of Judgment, Assignment: Eternity, Final Frontier; TOS - Fortunes of War novel: Battlestations!)

The term was sometimes also used to denote a ship's or station's command center in general or a ship's primary hull. (TOS novel: Web of the Romulans; TNG novel: The Children of Hamlin; DS9 novel: Warpath; TNG short story: "Final Flight")
