Commitment was a legal procedure in which an individual was remanded to the custody of a psychiatric or correctional institution.

After killing her father and several other eyewitness survivors of the Tarsus IV Massacre, Lenore Karidian was committed to psychiatric facilities on Benecia. Doctor Leonard McCoy informed USS Enterprise Captain James T. Kirk that Karidian would receive the best of care at the Benecia facilities. (TOS episode: "The Conscience of the King").
