A communications officer is a title given to a crewmember aboard a spacecraft, vehicle or outpost, an officer charged with the duty of monitoring and managing incoming communications, and respond if necessary.

History

Prior to the 22nd century, the technology to create universal translators was still being developed by Humans, meaning that communications officers needed linguistic skills as a scientist to translate communications. In the Earth Starfleet, this was a sciences division post. (Star Trek: Enterprise)

By the time of automated translation in the 23rd century, aboard Federation starships communications officer was an operations division role in Starfleet. (Star Trek: The Original Series)

By the late 24th century, communications were mostly automated, and on starships and outposts was conducted by the tactical officer or operations manager. (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
