The Enterprise is asked to play host to a representative of the Eremoids, a race the Federation has been negotiating with for mining rights. The representative, Verka, seems puzzled by many aspects of human behaviour, requesting complete privacy in his quarters and believing he is about to be attacked for a minor offence towards Colt. Spock informs Pike that every other Eremoid who has visited an alien ship has been killed in a fight over a trivial matter.
When a fight breaks out between Tyler and another crewmember at a party, Verka seems to believe that either they will kill each other or Pike will kill them as punishment. He is further perplexed when the Enterprise crew pull together to destroy a Klingon vessel that was attacking colony ships. Spock realises the Eremoids are empaths, whose emotions during conflict feed into each other and cause things to escalate. They have learned to manage this by living in mostly solitude but Verka wishes to reunite with a lover who cheated on him. Pike suggests he learn to control his emotions and use the communicator to speak with her in the meantime.
