A friendly reminder regarding spoilers! As always, the expanded Trek universe is in a period of major upheaval with the continuations of Strange New Worlds and Prodigy, the advent of new eras in gaming with the Star Trek Adventures RPG and Star Trek Online, as well as other eventful releases such as Section 31, the ongoing IDW Star Trek comic and spin-off Star Trek: Defiant. Therefore, please be courteous to other users who may not be aware of current developments by using the {{spoiler}}, {{spoilers}} OR {{majorspoiler}} tags when adding new information from sources less than six months old (even if it is minor info). In the Kelvin timeline, the Constitution II class[2] was a 23rd century Federation starship type, an explorer[1] class in Starfleet service in the 2260s decade. In the 2410s of the primary universe, the class entered service as a tier 6-rated intel cruiser for Federation Starfleet and non-Federation Khitomer Alliance members. Ships of the class were equipped with a proximity-based anti-opposition emitter, a weapon designed to combat Altamid drone ships. (STO website: Both Worlds: The Kelvin Constitution II!)

History and technical specifications[]

Kelvin timeline[]

Kelvin Constitution I and II

Constitution II- and Constitution-class (right).

Starfleet purpose-built this class for the exploration of the Altamid Nebula and was outfitted with cutting-edge navigational sensor and improved maneuverability. The USS Enterprise-A was constructed at Yorktown Station and equipped with experimental gravitational manipulation technology designed to counteract the swarm ships from Altamid that had destroyed the USS Enterprise. (STO website: Both Worlds: The Kelvin Constitution II!)

The Enterprise-A and ships of its type were classed as explorers. They were capable of mining rare materials in space. When operating for the Independent faction in the Neutral Zone, ships of the class could be fitted with a cloaking device. (ST video game: Fleet Command)

In the aftermath of a new front of the Temporal Cold War opening in the 2410s of the primary universe, Starfleet revived and received ship classes from other centuries. This included reviving 23rd century ship classes like the Kelvin timeline Constitution-class. (STO - Yesterday's War mission: "The Once and Future Agent", STO - Both Worlds mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Specifically, the multiversal conflict of the Khitomer Alliance and the Aetherian Concordium with the Borg Kingdom led to universes colliding, leading to the Kelvin timeline Constitution II class entering service in the primary universe in the year 2411. (STO website: Both Worlds: The Kelvin Constitution II!)

Typically for starships of the Kelvin timeline, a Constitution II-class vessel was equipped with Kelvin timeline phaser emitter arrays and photon torpedo launchers. The weapons layout consisted of five weapons in the fore position and three aft. It was equipped with a impulse engines, warp core and, like all 25th century Alliance starships, a quantum slipstream drive, enabling it to reach impulse, warp, transwarp and quantum slipstream velocities. Unlike in its native timeline, cloaking was an innate ability thanks to cloaking devices being standard on intel starships. The hull was modular and could be modified at shipyards interfaces operated by New Romulus Shipyards, Klingon Defense Force Order of Builders and Starfleet Shipyards Operations at Alliance facilities across the Milky Way Galaxy. (STO - Both Worlds missions: "Explore the Flotilla", "The Hunt is On", "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Bridge officer stations allowed for a commander pulling double duty as tactical officer and pilot, a commander doubling as engineer and intelligence officer, a science officer holding the rank of ensign, and a commander and lieutenant each from any department. As a cruiser the Constitution II was equipped with a cruiser command array. As an Alliance intel starship, a battle-hardened ship benefitted from absorptive plating, rapid repairs, enhanced hull plating, armored hull and a gravitational nexus trait, which could damage foes with gravitational eddies. The Enterprise-A was the first ship equipped with the proximity-based anti-opposition emitter (P.B.A.O.E.), which "bounced" phaser fire between the deflector shields and polarized hull plating to damage hostiles, like swarm ships, in close range. (STO website: Both Worlds: The Kelvin Constitution II!)
