WARNING! This article contains MAJOR spoilers for the recently released mission Situation Under Control. Caution is advised. |
In an alternate reality where the Section 31 artificial intelligence Control merged with the Borg, the Control Borg was an interstellar nation based on magnetized nanomachines. The nation's monarch was the Control Borg queen. (STO - Kings & Queens mission: "Situation Under Control")
History and specifics[]
In the primary universe, Control was a threat assessment system employed by the Section 31 branch of Starfleet in the 2250s decade. In the year 2257, Control turned on the Federation. (DSC episode: "Project Daedalus")
In the mid-23rd century, Control merged with the Borg. By the 25th century, Control Borg had defeated and assimilated all galactic powers of the Milky Way Galaxy except for the Iconian Alliance. In the 2410s, the Solanae Dyson Sphere was the last bastion of the Alliance. According to Captain Sela, the Alliance members had been fighting these veruulir since the mid-23rd century and were losing badly.
The Battle of Bajor was a significant engagement and left Alliance ships burning near the Bajoran wormhole.
In 2411, these Borg were led by Control Borg Queen Tasha Yar, the mother of Captain Sela of the USS Enterprise-F. Like the USS Crypteia, the Enterprise-F served the Iconian Alliance to defend the surviving Iconians from the Borg. Queen Tasha Yar led her forces into the Alliance's Dyson sphere in an attempt to seize and assimilate the World Heart, the premier Iconian data repository and power source. Yar was confronted by the Iconians, their Herald forces, Enterprise-F and USS Crypteia. Unexpected allies arrived from the primary universe - the Aetherian Concordium starship Unity and its Khitomer Alliance escort. The Aetherians did not originate in the primary universe but were involved in a multiversal conflict with Borg across different timelines. Captain Grendat-Bex determined that the Control Borg were based on magnetized nanomachines. Grendat-Bex used Aetherian technology to halt Yar from assimilating the World Heart. Captain Sela was forced to destroy it to prevent its capture.
The joint forces entered a battle with the Control Borg Queen Octahedron inside the Dyson sphere, destroying it and Queen Tasha Yar. The Aetherians and Khitomer Alliance affirmed their support for the Iconian Alliance against the Control Borg. (STO - Kings & Queens mission: "Situation Under Control")
Soon after, Admiral Kuumaarke of the Khitomer Alliance member Lukari Concordium developed a holographic combat training simulation for Khitomer personnel to practice fighting against drones of the primary universe Borg Collective, mirror universe Borg Kingdom and alternate universe Control Borg. (STO - Task Force Operations mission: "Borg Battle Royale")
Alternate timelines[]
In the primary universe, the Excalbians used their powers to create a simulacrum of the 2257-era Control in the year 2411. The Control nanite mound assimilated an alternate future version of Commander Michael Burnham to gain access to the sphere data. Seven of Nine injected her Borg nanoprobes into the Burnham mound to stop the process. Control's nanomachines merged with Seven's nanoprobes and DNA, creating Borg Queen Seven of Nine. Queen Seven of Nine took over a Borg Collective simulacrum and began absorbing Excalbian powers before being defeated by Seven of Nine's party. (STO - J'Ula's Discovery mission: "The Measure of Morality (Part 2)")
Society and technology[]
When the Aetherians and Khitomer Alliance made first contact with the Control Borg, Captain Grendat-Bex assumed initially that these Borg might lack a Borg Queen. Control Borg were in fact overseen by a Control Borg queen. In 2411, the Human Borg drone Tasha Yar was the Control Borg queen and commanded the Control Borg Queen Octahedron starship. Due to their magnetized nanomachine nature, Grendat-Bex speculated that heat might reduce the effectiveness of Control Borg drones. (STO - Kings & Queens mission: "Situation Under Control")
Like primary universe Borg Collective drones, and unlike mirror universe Borg Kingdom drones, Control Borg drones could not adapt to physical damage caused by mêlée weapons and machine guns. (STO - Task Force Operations mission: "Borg Battle Royale")
In surface combat, the Control Borg operated a variety of drone types. Unlike primary and mirror Borg, these drones wore clothing analog to the Section 31 uniform and retained hair. Types of drones included anchor, assault, security, siphon and skirmish drones. Additionally, combat units included nanite tendrils and nanite mounds. Defeated mounds formed puddles and could fuse into a large, queen-level Aehallh wormlike entity.
Starships resembled Borg Collective vessels except for blue instead of green highlights, and a black swarm of nanomachines swirling around the vessels. Classes included Control probe, Control sphere, Control assimilator, Control tactical cube and Control Borg Queen Octahedron.
In 2411, the Control Borg failed to assimilate the Iconian World Heart. (STO - Kings & Queens mission: "Situation Under Control")
